December 24, 2007Listener Gavin (aka GavT23), from just outside of Newcastle in the UK, took up the opportunity to come on the show today. He tells us about how he got into non-duality about five years ago after reading a book by Eckhart Tolle, and how he uses it in his life coaching work.

good to hear this stuff is happening a lot more now (like, when else, eh?). just swerved into your realm this evening and thought i’d say “oi, mate!” your guest, gavin, prompted me to relate a similar story.
was listening to eckhart some 3.5 years ago in seattle – without any searching/wanting/needing/expectations. in fact, i had no idea who he was. just that a close friend recommended him. she must’ve seen the hell i was living in. anyways, experienced a massive dis-identification of consciousness from the mental framework as a result.
eckhart was teaching “you are not your mind” in the Power of Now CD and it seemed to “come alive”. there came a clear realization that everything “i” believed about “me” amounted to no more than impotent thoughts in the head – devoid of any reality. it was a shocker, that.
suddenly a visualization: my head exploded into millions of shards of “colored glass”. OMFG! then it was like i was dying… for REAL! was horrifying in one sense but this so-called life had been so full of suffering (was off-n-on suicidal much of the preceding 47 years) that there was like a “what the f*** have i got to lose?!” attitude. so there came a “letting go” of “me”. really didn’t know if i’d wake up dead or in a rubber room at the local asylum. yeah – it was like that.
blacked out – lost track of time for some time *shrug*. then regained a semi-wakened state in what has been explained to be sat-chit-ananda. from that perch, all was seen, loved and understood as Self or Atman.
since then it has been like: real, then strange, then real strange and more recently, altogether UNreal. underlying it all, deep-deepening-deeper-still peace. not that tumult doesn’t arise in life situations. spouse died a few months ago after 23 years of marriage and 3.5 years with cancer. son, 16, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis a month later. had some (im-)personal tumults a few areas, one of which landed me in jail due to an alcoholic “relapse”. financials are precarious at best and yet life is bliss. huh? it’s like it’s not happening to “me”. there’s just eternal awareness here in this sack of skin, enjoying the show.
speaking of enjoying the show… (nice segue, eh?) keep it up! going to tune in more often.

I’m glad it inspired you mate!
I remember going round with the latest book that had some meaning for me thinking, “This is it!”, then I’d pick another one up at a later date and go round saying, “No, THIS is it!”. Then I’d come across a message that would ‘poo~poo’ the previous messages and I would be like, “No, no, really…THIS is it!”
Eventually, like I said in the chat with Cameron, exhaustion set in and I just found what was never ever anywhere else and everything was IT and IT was everything y’know.
If you join many IT’s together it can read like an endless stream of TIT’s running around in a circle trying to find the ‘IT’. Personally, I’d much rather put my feet up with a nice cup ‘o’ tea and a cigarette whilst watching the scenery go on by.
Sometimes that scenery includes ‘Gavin’ and other times it’s sticky toffee pudding and if the stickyness ‘disses’ the pudding or the toffee ‘disses’ the sticky then who really cares!
Eat it all up as if it were ONE anyway! lol

Tolle is a major competitor to Parsons in the Advaita marketplace. Advaita is still a niche in the overall existential marketplace and therefore market share is crucial. Adviata is still a long way from being able to compete with major corporations such as Catholicism and Scientology. As its share grows and competition heats up, so will the Advaitan Tower of Babel.
