The Long-Awaited Advaita Show #022 (MP3 – 13.8MB – 39min)

>LISTEN TO THE PODCAST HERE

Wow, I couldn’t believe it when I realized it’s been three weeks since you’ve had your dose of advaita goodness. I know there are other sources of advaita out there, but surely you all agree that this show is the most advaita of all advaita shows? We out-advaita the lot of ’em.

Anyway… enough bullshit, let’s get on with it.

Guests this week include:

Laya from Super-Cannes, France
Eliot

The main themes today were about small “i” versus big “I”, holding ones breath, and orgies. Yes, you read right, ORGIES. Laya has some experience in that area and once you’ve heard her accent, you’ll agree with me that she has a HUGE career as a guru ahead of her if she combines the accent with the orgies. Anyway… you’ll need to listen to the show.

I’ve tried to answer as many of your questions from the last couple of weeks as I could but, if I missed anyone, please re-post your question to this week’s show so I can find it next week!

Unfortunately, I have to report that The Advaita Show has dropped to #55 in the Podcast Alley rankings, so you won’t be getting another videocast this month (got to get us into the Top Ten)! Ohhhhhhhhh…. I know. But there is still a week left so, if you haven’t voted already in the month of February, you are letting the team down! Vote now by clicking here!

GRT Shw!!! A breath o f fresh air, really.

a few questions:1) what does one do with boredom???

2)in “THE ILLUSION” what role do the other galaxies and millions of stars play. Sure seems a waste of manifestation. why is that part of the illusion there???

3)Wei wu wei says “It is the dreamer of each dream that must awaken, the dreamer of the identified dream, whose dream figures disappear. He is the identified dreamer, not the impersonal dreamer of the total cosmos.”
this is like the ‘concept’ of soul/supersoul; atma/paramatma; nisargadatta’s
I-am-ness vs THAT. We see this concept of the ultimate reality bottled into an individual body-mind being. Is this the ‘part’ of the ‘whole’ that is conscious and identified with this world. my question is does a part of this impersonal that exist in each dreamed being as a ‘soul’? does one need to identify with this before discovering the ultimate, i.e is it a pre-requisite or a diving board to reach “THAT”?

    THANKS

    RAVI

it’s good to have you all back, ‘mates’!!!
    :-J

Cam, where did you get the idea that ‘chicks’ aren’t ‘into’ Advaita?
Laya, like Amei, was terrific and clear as a bell.

something Eliot said in this last show, about “a carrot that’s been foisted on us” is really key!
the carrot is our distraction or apparent addiction to thought and activity.
it seems that when we feel there is no entertaining activity, whether in the form of our ‘senses’ or in the form of thought, the apparent ‘I’ gets bored.
so ‘I’ seeks to ‘fill’ in the ‘space’ with some ‘thing’, in any form.

also the notion of “robot” is really much like what the ‘I’ of identification is, a computer with programming downloaded, moving along automatically.
undeniably, being simply is, without definitions and parameters.

and yet, within This Being, all apparent experience is, Being includes Everythang!

so … Freedom is all there is …
and although it is true that there is no independent ‘I’ or “you”, the Advaita show goes on and questions go on, and apparent realization goes on, etc.
therefore, it seems that This Realization, which the advaita show is addressing, can seem to be ‘arrived at’ by verbal explanations. sometimes amusingly so!

and so here is an aside to Gilbert,
    Lighten Up!
laughter can loosen the egoic grip on identity.
apparent variety is. why question it or fight it?

Advaita is not about self-improvement, or being serious, or any other concept ‘you’, ‘I’, or anyone, may have. some times serious appears, some times not!
    c’est la vie!!!
    and, vive la différence!

    Hey Cam…

Bodhidharma did not tell his student to chop off his arm , ding dong!
His so called student offered his arm to Bodhidharma to show how much love for the truth he had. He was willing to give an arm or a leg, ar ar.

Love the “four more years!” in the Nixon voice.

The holding your breath routine did seem as though you guys were smokin a joint, haha!

    cheers
    Brian

  4. Cameron says:

Ah Brian, you should never let the details get in the way of a good story!

But yes you’re right. For those who want to read this and more stories about Bodhidharma, I just found this site:

  5. Mark says:

Thanks for the show! Welcome back.

Glad to know I’m not a robot afterall! Thanks for that!

I wonder if I could request something of you laughing gurus….Please keep using those metaphors to bring home the teachings! I love the Advaita lingo bingo but it doesn’t help me understand the lessons quite as effectively as your metaphors do. You know, the “phone booth” example, the “holding you breath” example. Those were great.

    Thanks for the laughs.

  6. Richard says:

Hello Bob and Cameron. Good to hear you again. What a fun show it was.

Bob, In his post James Braha invited you to revisit him. Is it possible you might return to the U.S.A.?

Also Bob: What is the highest teaching please?

Non-duality is unity. Criticizing Gilbert or anyone seems divisive and incongruent with oneness. Like the old t.v. show “Barney Miller” where 2 men were arrested for having a fistfight over which one’s meditation technique was better.

    Best wishes,
    R.

  7. Mike A. says:

Yea, another trip for Sailor Bob to the states is a good idea. I know my Mom in Los Angeles really wants to meet him and I would too. But I realize Sailor Bob is old and I don’t blame him for not coming back. But then again, if he can wake up at 2:30AM and get to the gym to lift weights by 4:00AM, maybe a trip across the globe isn’t that big of a deal?

    Mike from San Francisco

  8. Gareth says:

Great to have you all back i can stop taking the valium now

the belief in a separate self and it’s life story appears real as does the suffering,
and even if it’s not really happening , it’s a bummer of a “not really happening”
why does the illusion seem to win out and prevail so ?

    thanks
    Gareth

  9. Misa says:

    Hello,

can you be more specific about Laya’ s organic experiences please.

    Dr. Lud’o Sobotka

  10. Graeme says:

    Greetings from Scotland!
Couple of questions for you chappies. Apologies if similar have been asked and answered previously – I’ve only caught a couple of shows so far.
    Anyways:
    1. Pain – When you “fully realised” types encounter physical pain is your reaction along the lines of “Oh. How interesting. A fluffy white cloud that I conceptually refer to as a “migraine” is drifting across my clear, blue sky of awareness.” ? Or, is it more “Jesus! I need an aspirin quick!”? Does your experience of pain change with Advaita?
    2. I get way too emotionally involved in football (the kind that the “Socceroos” play, not Aussie rules or that American nonsense). My mood swings with the fortunes of 11 guys I don’t even know personally- but when we win there’s a real high to be had. When you “get” Advaita, do a lot of things that you took seriously just lose their hold? Does life then lack a little excitement??
    3. Errr… just make up something clever about omniscience or something and ask Bob that, Cameron.
    Cheers guys

  11. This was by far the best show ever. Laughter is not only the best medicine, but it is contagious, so may qualify as a disease as well. The laughing guru may be carrying something for which we need shots. Jello shots.

Keep up the laughter therapy, boyz and gullz. I have giggle spit on my keyboard.

    Much love,

Good to hear your voices again!
    Great listening!

“Advaita! No thanks I’ve already got ONE!”

BTW: Thanks for the site link Cameron.
Have put a few advaita links on the blog.
The Advait Show is placed right after his Bobness!

  14. Luly says:

    Richard,
my comments were not meant to be critical.
perhaps i was not very diplomatic in the way i phrased my views.
and perhaps you read them that way.
they were made in response to Gilberts frequent harazzments of cameron’s style.
sorry you took it that way.
i agree with you that non-duality is unity. what else could it be?!
hence, it is all expression as it arises unimpeded.
so again, sorry if i offended. as it happens i have one of Gilberts books and enjoy it very much. but he is definitely a bit on the serious side sometimes. and that’s good and o.k. as well.

variety is not only the spice of life, it is inevitable!

  15. Rich Daddy says:

Let’s see… self or Self…. no self or know Self… seems like a lot of trouble. He says toe may toe… she says toe mah toe… who’s right? who cares.. let’s shut up, go in the garden, pluck a ripe red veggie off the vine, enjoy the squishy, squashy, texture… the robust flavor, and a good healthy stool after.
Besides, there are vitally important questions that need to be addressed: If my aunt had a dick, would she be my uncle?

  16. master zen says:

The Bible says; “as a man thinkith, so is he”. If a man stops thinking and remains conscious, what does he become?

  17. Richard says:

    Luly,
Sorry if it seemed I was refering to you. My remarks were meant generally, to all, including myself. In a post I also questioned Gilbert’s comments. But he has been helpful to me as has Cameron. Good thing none of this is real!

    With love,
    R.

  18. what i have been observing here is a disease. the seeker addiction. one fellow who has been to every advaita “teacher-signpost” known to exist over the last 40 years and has even been to the mecca of advaita, Ramana’s Ashram in India, just keeps on cleiming stubbornly “i am that … but.”

yes but! “it’s only conceptual. its only intellectual. it’s all words. the energy sets us free. where can “i” go “next” to “bask in the energy?”

Hopeless cases like this one pique a sense of angry compassion here … i just want to shout at the top of my quite loud voice Fer christ’s sake go have a brew and get laid!” In fact I said exactly that to someone not long ago.

Enough already. quit seeking. you ARE that. Now shut the freak UP.

Maybe it’s really about “Shut up and die already?”

Please O enlightened master Sri Sri Sri Swami Bobbananda – Ji (jeez-O-flip and jeezzus h christ on a freakin crutch) … Please point out forcefully how it’s all BULLSHIT and there is NO enlightenment to be HAD!

    ENOUGH ALREADY.

I love you, Bob. And Cameron and Gilbert and everyone on line … And I know you love me. That is all I give two shits about any more.

The Advaita show is a genuine candystore of mindless treats … keep it going y’all

charlie … aka the madman across the water

PS … Vicki, I am NOT gonna clean up your keyboard.

  19. Dear Charlie,

    Giggle-spit evaporates just like concepts….

    Love, Vicki

  20. gilbert says:

Ah! That’s better. Somehow the pain of your voice, Cam, is more bareable.
Cameron, the Gobble de Goop King of Advaita! Can’t help loving the dero.
As soon as we connect this ordinary presence to ‘a Label’ like Advaita or whatever the mind goes with the ‘merry go ride’. Yet the essential presence has not changed, ever.
This paradox belongs to the thinker. Understanding is thoughtless in its essence. Therefore everything is understood ‘before’ any understand-er comes into play.
That is some gobble de goop. Love ya – gilbert

  21. Luly says:

    hi Bob,
i have a question regarding human interactions, or relationships.

what can one do (or say), and how, when confronted with what clearly is a person or situation that is confrontational and where there is no compromise in sight?

    also,
how about, even when the situation is not confrontational but is just simply driven by habitually deluded patterns (even ‘good’ ones) and then appears to set ‘us’ back, so to speak, into a dualistic way of thinking and behaving?
then i find my self at a loss as to what to ‘do’. and my mind either draws a blank or gets frenetic and confused.

    Richard,
thanks for the response. even ‘tho you may not have been pointing at any one, i did come to see how my statements could be misconstrued.

    which brings me to this point;
what any one means by what they say is uncertain even at best and sometimes not even clear to one’s own self (i.e. – mind).
so words can mostly serve, for my self at least, as ways of ‘sharing’. granted all this within the apparent dream!

    Charlie,
    oh yes!
take me to the candy store!
‘we’ have the seeker dis-ease, but with his ‘Bobness’, ‘Cameron’ and ‘Eliot’, and their lovely guests, it can re-mind the mind of its own fleetingness and in substantiality, and meaninglessness!
but can ‘we’ avoid the seeking at all???
for me here, it’s like shooting a basket; if i think about it, i miss, completely.
but more importantly, i hardly ever say no to chocolate candy.
if we don’t call it seeking, as ‘Bob’ would probably instruct ‘us’, then it is just enjoyment of a really lively, frequently funny, experience.
oh joy! oh rapture! take ‘me’ to the candy store, please!
‘they’ do say laughter is good for the ‘body’s’ health.
as is a wee bit of chocolate.

    ttfn,
    Luly

p.s. – loved the last show!
Cameron, thanks for your continued efforts to get the technology working.

  22. Mike Smith says:

    Cam and Bob:

Porky Pigg is also an adviatian ” Blee, blee, blee “Thats” all Folks – That is all

QUESTION: Do you often see Oneness in objects? Does the appearance go back and forth? For example, the other day I was taking a test for work and started seeing the transparency in the paper, ink and words while at the same time trying (or not) to find the answers! That was fun

Great show – the clocks are the best part – ha ha ha

  23. New POST on the BLOG at http://www.TheEternalState.org
    ~ no thing to i to i am ~

sitting quietly after listening to the advaita podcast … there is awareness … not a thing just That

and arising from That is an i – ness … entitying into apparent existence as i am then the thought i am but all-at-once-like-now it IS what i seem to be … and then IT says something is rotten in denmark – or california – or HERE

IT says i am bad … essentially a ‘bad person’ … that is what it thinks i am … an entity, separated from all that is … broken. And now bad on top of that. IT feels i don’t belong on this planet in this human race i just do not fit in anywhere … and i cannot count on anything or anyone else … IT thinks I am alone.

No one will take care of me i must do it alone if i want something done i must do it i am so irresponsible i must take responsibility o god i can’t do it i can’t do anything right IT SAYS over and over and over like a tape looping back repeating itself to make a ME

so IT thinks and IT thinks ME into apparent but it ‘feels real’ existence. Here now I Am That IT unless there is NO thought but IT cannot DO no-thought.

Dilemma? Paradox? Who the bleep knows? Not I, not IT …

    bleep me i dunno

    Warm Regards,
    Charlie

  24. Hi Bob … Love You

There are some teachers who say that there must be an “Event” and until this event occurs there may be a belief in “No me” but the believer is still subtly there. That feels true here … But at the same time there is simply an okayness about whatever is at the moment, much of the time … and that is a wonderful gift.

    can you address this?

  25. Gary from San Rafael, CA says:

    Dear Bob:

Nisargadatta has suggested that all knowledge is available to the realized. Perhaps this is the bases for many questions which take the form of, “Are there extra-terrestrials and is Cameron one of them?” Clearly a reasonable question, but what does it have to do with eliminating ego suffering and why do us Bobletts expect you to reveal all? Also, does the questioner’s life change when you answer questions unrelated to the lifting of the mind’s “self”-imposed veil? Of course, these are all rhetorical questions. Cameron is most certainly an ET! Simply put, why should the infinite be compelled to answer every question and just why are you holding out on us? I’ll leave it to the questioners to examine how they are managing their self-enquiry. After all, who is it that is doing the managing…ehhh?

  26. i know why gary sees clearly

    he’s an i doctor

  27. Jim Macdonald says:

The habit pattern. Oh the dreaded habit pattern. This apparent mind stream is very compulsive at times and feels out of control as it is of course…But alas…An addiction arises in consciousness and I see I am again about to indulge. SHhiiittt. I’ve done it again. I’m wretched, a weak barnacle on the bum of life. But then I rationalize again. Hey no one did anything so don’t blame yourself for being weak. Its just concsciousness functioning. The compulsion continues. The addiction lurks in the shadows for no one. Bob. How do we stop addictive behavior with this teaching.
    Many thanks Jim Macdonald

  28. Nadeem says:

“Intelligence-energy” is the most puzzling term I’ve ever heard for THAT. It keeps distracting me ;D.
    Isn’t “intelligence” a human phenomenon?
    Isn’t “energy” a measurement?

  29. Hi again Bob/Cam et al

Bob, your response regarding the little i in i understand is quite clear, and i have a further query … can you draw a clear distinction for us on the difference between “Knowing” and “Believing”?

How does pure non-dual knowingness differ from the belief that “one has understanding?”

Thanks. love you all madly … i hear great stuff coming out now, from Cameron and Eliot as well

  30. Cameron says:

Nadeem! Someone who finally agrees with me!

  31. james says:

I’ve been doing a lot of meditating and study, and sometimes “I get it,” I experience myself as Awareness, free, peaceful Prescene. Sadly at other times, I sink into deep depression. This has been going on for quite some times…. and I have tried different treatments, medications, etc, to no real avail. I am seriously considering killing myself, which I suppose would just be killing the body….. I used to just feel suicidal occasionally, when the depression was really bad, now, after over a decade of deep depression, it is starting to look like a rational choice. I plan on giving myself another six months or so to see if I can make it out of this, and am just wondering if Bob has any advice. I sometimes think about coming to visit, though from understanding the teachings, I don’t see what that could accomplish.

  32. Richard says:

    Cameron & Nadeem,

Bob often mentions the Biblically ascribed qualities of God: omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence. Couldn’t intelligence-energy be equated with omniscience (the all knowing of God) & omnipotence (the all power which is measured as energy)?

But why be concerned with words or anything else?

  33. Nadeem says:

Ah, thank you Richard. It makes (more) sense now. Now I remember hearing Bob equate ‘energy’ with movement and the appearances. So I suppose Intelligence-energy = Knowing-appearance. Yep, it fits.
My idea of “intelligence” is something like the speed of mental processing. So something like “Cognizant-energy” would have made more sense to me.
Thing is, you’re reading or listening to pointers, something starts to resonate, then you hear something like “Isn’t it just the intelligence-energy?”. Then I’m like “umm…. huh? maybe that wasn’t it then.”
So thanks for clearing that up, Richard.

  34. Cameron says:

RIchard, why do the show at all? To point the way. With words. If you’re going to use words, I figure you might as well use the best words, the clearest words, the least confusing words. Of course, at the end of the day, thems that’s gonna get it, is gonna get it. And thems that isnt gonna get it, doesn’t matter, cuz they are already it anyways. 🙂

  35. Doug Downs says:

Isn’t there there someway to elimate Charlie Hayes from the link. His comment are so annoying…

  36. Gary from San Rafael, CA says:

    Doug:

For one minute we can suggest that you have free will. If Charlie offends, don’t read his posts. Of course, there is the Advaita answer, but who cares to give that.

  37. Bob, Isn’t there there some way to elimate Charlie Hayes from the link? His comments are so annoying…
